Modena, the football team with over a century of history, started its journey in 1912. At that time, the people of Modena spent their time taking long walks in the shade of the porticos. The children of Modena played “pezzòli”, “zacagna”, “scundròla”, while the girls preferred ring-around-the-rosy. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Alberto Braglia won three gold medals, bringing the name of Modena abroad. In the city, therefore, the champions, the heroes, were loved, known, and desired. The first real leather ball was brought to Modena by a student with a mustache, who arrived from Bisceglie, in the province of Bari. His name was Luigi Ventura, and in the city, he was given the nickname “Papagni”. Already starting from 1910, football was a thing for “aristocratic” environments, frequented and composed of young and daring students. The Virides team was formed, which represented the Muratori high school, they chose a white uniform, and played outside the Sant’Agostino gate. The Virides soon disappeared, preferring Greek and Latin, after a brief rivalry with the students of the “Tecnico”. Luigi Ventura, known as “Papagni”, and Ugo Mariani founded the Student Football Association, chose a red uniform. They went to play not far away, in a public gravel pitch. The Fiere Corse e Cavalli company complained, because the boys, playing, made noise and had fun, but according to them, they disturbed the horses. The boys decided to move to the piazza d’Armi, but were soon chased away from there as well. Luca Mariani, Ugo's brother and a student at the Collegio San Carlo, had founded the Audax football club in 1911, with a white and black striped jersey. The two city teams organized matches between themselves every week, and the Mariani brothers openly challenged each other. The rivalry, especially in the Mariani household, was heated, until the two brothers decided to found a single team to represent Modena. So, the story of Modena is a story of passion, of love for football. The team has experienced moments of glory, but also difficulties. But, despite everything, Modena has always been a team loved by its fans. Its history is a story that deserves to be told, and which continues to be written every day.
